New Flying Dutchman Registrations – A Milestone for the Class! 5 (3)

We are proud to announce a new milestone in the history of the Flying Dutchman class – the registration of a series of brand new FD boats!

In April, hull number 11700 was officially booked, marking another chapter in our rich class history – exactly 70 years after the Flying Dutchman was first designed and recognized internationally, and later went on to serve as an Olympic class until 1992.

Our congratulations go to Tomasz Jankowiak (POL 64) on his brand-new Mader-built FD, and also to Domokos Andras (HUN 11701) and Lee Costelloe (USA 11702), who have secured their new boats as well. It’s exciting to see fresh energy flowing into the class across multiple continents!

We extend our sincere thanks to the builders for their high-quality craftsmanship in creating these beautiful boats.  A special thank-you also goes to Helmut Klug (Germany) and Paul Hemker (USA) for their meticulous work on measurements.

New boats in the class not only enhance the fleet but also contribute to growth by releasing quality second-hand boats to new sailors – a win for everyone and for the future of the IFDCO community.

As IFDCO Boat Registrator, I kindly remind all sailors: if you sell your boat, please notify me of the new owner via the form on the back of the measurement certificate – or simply drop me an email. I will gladly assist with transferring ownership and sending the appropriate forms.

The measurement forms and certificates for the new boats will be issued soon.

Let’s keep the FD spirit sailing strong!

Kieler Woche 2025 Regatta 4.8 (4)

The Kieler Woche 2025 (26th-29th June) regatta brought together 27 Flying Dutchman teams from Germany, Poland, Hungary, and Austria for four days of dynamic racing on the iconic waters of Kiel. With its world-class organization and vibrant sailing culture, Kiel once again delivered a memorable experience for all involved.

The event offered a full program of racing, with conditions that kept teams sharp and strategies constantly evolving. The breeze was generous throughout the regatta, giving the fleet a proper workout, and while some days were more challenging than others, the overall tone was one of determination, excitement, and above all—enthusiasm.

Day 1 (Thursday) – Three races kicked off the series, with solid breeze and fair conditions that let the fleet settle into rhythm.
Day 2 (Friday) – Two more races were sailed, testing boat speed and teamwork with classic Kiel waves and tactical opportunities across the course.
Day 3 (Saturday) – Another three races pushed teams to find consistency and capitalize on shifting patterns.
Day 4 (Sunday) – The final two races wrapped up the series in style, with focused racing and a tight battle for podium positions.

Kieler Woche Podium 2025:
🥇 Szabolcs MAJTHENYI / András DOMOKOS – HUN 70
🥈 Kilian KÖNIG / Kai Schäfers – GER 113
🥉 Malte BURKERT / Stephan HANDICK – GER 8

The regatta was organized with the professionalism and attention to detail that Kiel is renowned for. Everything—from boat launching to race management—ran like clockwork, with exceptional onshore support and a warm, welcoming atmosphere throughout the week.

But Kieler Woche 2025 was more than just great racing. It was a celebration of the Flying Dutchman spirit—a class where friendship, sportsmanship, and good humor are just as important as speed and tactics. From shared tools to shared stories, the camaraderie among sailors shone just as brightly as the competition.

Particularly inspiring were the four mixed crews on the starting line, three of whom completed the full series—proving once again that the FD class is a space where dedication, teamwork, and passion matter most.

In the end, Kieler Woche 2025 reminded us why this class continues to thrive: fast boats, fair racing, and a fantastic community. Whether finishing on the podium or simply enjoying the ride, everyone went home with memories of a great event and looking forward to the next time this amazing fleet meets again.
